Sophia believed deeply in helping others. She noticed when someone needed kindness, she cared about what others were going through, and she never believed you had to be an adult to make a difference.
Carrying on her legacy means more to me than simply keeping her name alive. I want the way Sophia lived to inspire the next generation to live a little differently, too.
I want teenagers to discover how incredible it feels to help someone else. I want them to get excited about serving their communities, dream up their own ways to make a difference, and realize that kindness can become something they carry with them for the rest of their lives.
And selfishly, as Sophia's mom, I want something else too.
I want to hear teenagers say Sophia's name with pride and excitement. I want them to tell their friends, "I'm one of Sophia's Youth Ambassadors." I want her name attached to laughter, friendships, big ideas, acts of kindness, and young people who believe they can change something.
Sophia was only sixteen, but she left behind proof that a young person can have an extraordinary impact on the world.
My hope is that these Youth Ambassadors will carry a little piece of that forward – and eventually inspire the kids who come after them to do the same.
